Is It Better To Be Too Fat Or Too Thin?
Ideally, both extremes in your weight is bad. You want to be around twenty pounds, give or take, of what your doctor thinks is your ideal body weight. You can also use online calculators to help you figure out what you should weigh. People with any type of depression tend to fall on one extreme or another. They are either too thin or too fat. As someone who has been ideal, way too thin and way too fat I can say with all confidence that it’s better to be too fat than to be too thin.
It Sucks To Be Too Thin
Before I got my major depression treated, I didn’t have much of an appetite. Whenever I was worried, upset or agitated, I felt nauseous. And I was worried, upset and agitated pretty much all of the time. When I was homeless, eating was a poratic event. I’m 5′ 10″ and went down to just over 100 pounds. I could actually wear petite sizes.
And it was awful. Not only did I catch any cold or germ going around, not only was I freezing cold all of the time but it hurt to sit. There wasn’t any padding between my seatbones and the seat. Watching a movie in the cinema was a test of endurance, as the seat gradually became more and more painful as the movie wore on.
It Sucks To Be Too Fat
Of course, I’m not advocating that everyone with depression should not try to manage their weight. Too much weight on your frame can get you very sick and give you fun things like sleep apnea, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes type 2. One thing that many antidepressants and anti-psychotic medications do is that they make you put on weight.
In my case, I needed to put on weight. However, I’ve done so well that now I really need to loose about 20 pounds. But it sure is nice not to be nauseated all of the time and being able to take a seat without pain. Food is my friend, although it takes the mickey every now and then.
Don’t Stop Meds Cold Turkey
Some medications like Zyprexa are infamous for putting weight on you. Don’t just stop any medication because you know it can help your metabolism slow down. This can bring on painful physical and emotional withdraw symptoms. Please talk to your doctor first and try to make yourself clean somethign in your home. This not only raises your sefl-esteem, but gives you a bit of exercise.
